Contour Chair

12 to 14 Weeks

The expressive Contour Chair is a visually stunning example of the sculptural and organic design language of Børge Mogensen. First presented in 1949 at the Copenhagen Cabinetmakers’ Guild Furniture Exhibition, the chair presented an innovative aesthetic as Mogensen challenged both form and materials: The form-pressed veneer showcased the possibilities of both new materials and technology and the chair became an exponent of a new design movement. With veneer as the point of departure, the Contour Chair represents a new way for Mogensen, as he took a break designing furniture in solid wood.

The wooden frame, angled legs and the curved, backward-sloping seat is contrasted by a decorative backrest. The form allows for flexible sitting positions and although the design was innovative for Mogensen, signature details such as the mortise and tenon joints completed with contrasting wooden wedges demonstrate the iconic designer’s ongoing passion for craftsmanship. The result is an impressive, distinctive chair, destined to become a long-lasting design classic.

39 cm (seat height), 73 cm (height), 63.5 cm (depth) and 53.5 cm (width).

Manufactured in oak, walnut and a combination of these two wood types with various finishes. The chair’s mortise and tenon joints are always completed with wedges in contrasting wood and it has an upholstered seat in either leather or fabric.
